How to Buy a Koala Weighted Blanket

The Koala Blanket was designed and developed over countless nights by a team who struggled to sleep themselves.

Hundreds of materials were tested to find the softest, most comfortable outer cover, and various types of plastic and glass beads were tested to find the perfect way to add weight to the insert while retaining comfort.

The result is a weighted blanket that feels divine. It’s so comfortable, and so cosy, our customers don’t want to take it off. In fact, we don’t either, which is why we can often be found wearing our own blankets around HQ on our breaks!

If you fancy one of your own, here’s how to buy a weighted blanket:

Sizes, weights and colours

The Koala Blanket is available in two sizes:

  • 48 x 78-inches
  • 60 x 80-inches

And in two weights:

  • 8kg
  • 9kg

There’s only one cover for it which is grey and reversible - one side is Ultra Soft Mink, and the other side is Silky Bamboo.

There are 4 possible Koala Blanket combinations to choose from. We kept things simple because weighted blankets are, by definition, simple products. This makes buying a weighted blanket easier and lets us focus on creating a quality product.

How to choose the right configuration

Blanket weight

A weighted blanket should be 10% of your body weight, but any number between 7% and 13% works just fine.

At this weight, the therapeutic effects of Deep Pressure Stimulation are felt. If a blanket weighs less than 7% of your body weight, you might not feel it, and if it weighs more than 13%, you will probably feel overwhelmed.

Here’s what that means:

  • If you weigh < 85kg choose the 6.8kg blanket
  • If you weigh > 85kg choose the 9kg blanket

Blanket size

Wondering what size weighted blanket should I buy?

All Koala Blankets are big enough to cover your body, but not all of them will cover your bed. Which is why we have two sizes available.

Our smallest size, 48 x 78-inches, will cover a single or long single bed and around two thirds of a double. It’s the same size as the average single duvet.

Our largest size, 60 x 80-inches, will cover a double or queen or king bed.

Here’s a helpful image to illustrate this:

If you share a bed, also consider your partner. They may or may not be keen on having a weighted blanket on them.

Here’s what that means:

  • If you have a single bed, or a double, king, or queen-size bed but your partner does not want the weighted blanket on them, choose the 48 x 78-inch blanket
  • If you have a double, king, or queen-size bed, and you have a partner who does not mind having a weighted blanket on them, choose the 60 x 80-inch blanket

What to do when you get it

When your Koala Blanket’s delivered, you can unpack it and start using it immediately without airing it or washing it.

When we designed the Koala Blanket, we decided on a manufacturing process and materials that do not produce an artificial smell.

Your Koala Blanket should simply smell ‘new’ and it will absorb your scent over time. Within a week, it will smell no different than your favourite pillow!

If you do happen to get it dirty, the outer cover is machine washable on a cold wash with regular non-bio or bio detergent.

You should always hang it to dry. We advise against using a dryer because the heat can damage the material and stitching.

How to use it

The Koala Blanket has no moving parts. You can wear it around the house, curl up with it on the sofa, or cover yourself up with it in bed.

If you do sleep with it in bed, we developed a very useful loop and tie system which allows you to fix your Koala Blanket to your duvet. This keeps it in place.

Plenty of other weighted blankets have no such feature, and they have a tendency to ride up and down in bed. This is bad because it creates an uneven weight distribution. This reduces the effect of Deep Pressure Stimulation, because DPS requires a gentle and constant pressure to be applied to the body.

We recommend you use the loop and tie system in bed. Otherwise, just use your Koala Blanket like a regular blanket.

Outer cover

Something else to consider is which side of the outer cover to use. The Koala Blanket has a reversible cover. One side is Ultra Soft Mink, for colder temperatures, and the other side is Silky Bamboo, for warmer temperatures.

We don’t offer outer covers with different materials because we believe one cover that does it all is better through its simplicity. You just switch the outer cover around if you get too hot or too cold and that’s it, job done.

The Ultra Soft Mink side is akin to a big fluffy dressing gown, while the Silky Bamboo is akin to a soft cotton. Both have their place.

Don’t give up on it

While some users of the Koala Blanket report an immediate therapeutic benefit with Deep Pressure Stimulation, some people take a few weeks to notice the effect. If this happens to you, our advice is to stick with it.

Weighted blankets have been scientifically proven to increase the body’s production of useful hormones like melatonin, which regulates the body’s sleep-wake cycle. However, that increase often happens gradually, which means it is common for the therapeutic benefits of a weighted blanket to be felt in time.

It’s also normal to have a bedding in period. You might love it when you first start using it, or not, but really, you just need to get used to it.

Wearing a weighted blanket is a lot different to a normal blanket because it has a perceptible weight. It feels like a big, giant hug, and replicates the sensation of being swaddled or cuddled. This has a calming and relaxing effect, which can help you fall asleep faster and sleep for longer. But it might take a bit of time to work.
