Everyone loves being hugged and cuddled, don’t they? That warm, cosy feeling you get when a loved one wraps their arms around you is special. But it isn’t unique. For you see, that same sensation can be replicated with the Koala Blanket.
The Koala Blanket is a weighted blanket that replicates the sensation of being hugged. In doing so, it makes you feel content and relaxed.
People who suffer from anxiety swear by their weighted blanket as a coping mechanism -- and the effect isn’t superficial.
Research has found that weighted blankets relax the central nervous system, making it release “happy hormones” known as endorphins.
This release of endorphins relieves stress and reduces anxiety, and the effect is widespread, with a 2015 study of weighted blankets finding that 63% of people who wore one experienced a reduction in anxiety. Another study, this time from 2011, found weighted blankets reduced anxiety in one of the most anxious types of study group -- dental patients (if you hate visiting the dentist, you’ll relate to this).
How it works
The Koala Blanket simulates a type of therapy known as Deep Pressure Stimulation (DPS) which has a lot of scientific research behind it. Hospitals around the world utilise this therapy with “squeeze machines” (otherwise known as hug machines) to treat patients with anxiety and sensory disorders.
DPS applies a gentle but firm pressure to the body to simulate the sensation of being hugged or cuddled. Medical experts have known for a long time that such interaction can trigger the release of endorphins, which are the “happy hormones” responsible for making us feel happy and on top of the world.
Weighted blankets simulate this same therapy, but unlike squeeze machines, they can simulate the therapy ANYWHERE, ANYTIME. This is why weighted blankets have become so popular with people who suffer from stress and anxiety.
Does it work?
The Koala Blanket comforts you by applying gentle pressure to your body. Wearing it feels like you are being cuddled. The sensation is gentle and not overbearing, because the weight of the blanket does not exceed 13% of your body weight.
The therapy definitely works for most people, helping to provide comfort and reduce anxiety and stress. We have hundreds of happy customers who would recommend the Koala Blanket to other people suffering from anxiety. But there are also scientific studies to back up our claim about weighted blanket therapy.
The most notable studies are this 2008 study published in the journal Occupational Therapy in Mental Health, and this 2011 study published in the Journal of Medical and Biological Engineering. Both studies found a majority of participants had lower anxiety when using a weighted anxiety blanket to enable DPS.
Coming away from the science-y stuff of endorphins and Deep Pressure Stimulation, the Koala Blanket is also designed to be as comfortable as possible.
The outer cover is reversible, with one side finished in ultra-soft faux mink for warmer nights, and the other side finished in organic cotton-bamboo for cooler nights. Both sides are beautiful, and the textiles are top quality. They are so good you’d be quite happy having them made into a snazzy jumper.
The inner cover is also made from cotton and sewn into small individual pockets there are small glass pellets which make up the weight.
The decision to use glass pellets was based on comfort. We tested out various other blankets and found plastic pellets were noisier and more noticeable. One of the issues we had with competitor products was they were noisy when the pellets moved around, so we set out to eliminate this problem once and for all.
The pellets we use are smaller but denser than plastic pellets, so they take up less space inside the blanket. They’re also non-toxic, BPA-free and 100% recyclable. They are double-sewn into individual pockets to prevent leakage.
The Koala Blanket also has a unique loop and tie fastening system which fixes the outer cover to the inner cover. This ensures the inner blanket stays fixed to the outer cover always. Other weighted blankets we tested suffered from annoying slippage and would bunch up in one area because the inner cover would slip its place. The Koala Blanket has no such problem so is much comfier to use.
Overall, the Koala Blanket comforts you in a few ways. It is designed to simulate Deep Pressure Stimulation therapy which is proven to help reduce stress and anxiety, and the high-quality materials ensure you can wear it anytime.
