Struggling to sleep? Just one night with this clever sleeping aid could change the way you sleep forever.
The inability to sleep or sleep well has a real medical name. It’s called insomnia, and it’s a terrible thing to have.
People suffering from insomnia struggle to fall asleep (if at all), and when they finally do, their sleep patterns are quite often short and broken.
You’re not alone. As many as 16 million adults in the United Kingdom are suffering from sleeplessness. In one NHS survey, 30% of respondents said they are severely sleep deprived, which is a shockingly high number.
Thankfully, there may be a solution at hand - the Koala Blanket.
What is it?
The Koala Blanket is a weighted blanket that uses deep pressure touch stimulation to improve sleep quality and break the cycle of insomnia. It uses a unique loop and tie system, so it can fix and stay put to the duvet itself.
How does it work?
As we all know, a warm, cosy hug can relieve stress and reduce our anxiety. The Koala Blanket works on the same principle.
Research suggests sleeping with a weighted blanket can improve sleep quality by providing a reassuring, cocooning feeling.
In other words, by replicating the feeling of being cuddled.
The medical name for this type of therapy is deep pressure touch stimulation (DPS). DPS works by applying firm, but gentle pressure to the body.
When performed properly, this type of stimulation therapy has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality.
In particular, deep pressure touch stimulation has been shown in studies to be particularly useful for treating symptoms of anxiety. One study, from 1987, noted it as encouraging and since then newer studies have noted this too.
The beauty is it isn’t expensive or complicated to get started with. Anyone can try it, although there are some best practices to keep in mind, especially with the Koala Blanket so you can get the most out of it.
How do you use it?
The Koala Blanket has no moving parts. There’s no complicated setup, and no batteries required. You can just throw the Koala Blanket over you like a normal blanket, and follow a good bedtime routine (here’s some tips for that).
The most important aspect of buying the Koala Blanket is the weight you choose. This is because a blanket that’s too light won’t apply enough pressure to your body - and a blanket that’s too heavy may be uncomfortable.
The Koala Blanket is available as a 6.8kg or 9kg blanket. Your blanket should be 7 to 13% of your body weight.
This means if you weigh under 85kg, the right weight of blanket is 6.8kg. If you weigh 85kg or over, the right weight of blanket is 9kg.
Once you’ve sussed the right weight, choose the blanket size that matches your bed and follow these simple steps after unpacking:
- Identify the two covers. The Koala Blanket is reversible. The side for cold nights is made from Ultra Soft Mink, the side for warm nights Silky Bamboo.
- Tie your blanket to your duvet using the loop and tie fastening system. This is important to keep your Koala Blanket fastened to the duvet to eliminate the issue of it bunching up during the night.
- Get into bed. Try closing your eyes for 10-15 minutes and let the magic of deep pressure touch stimulation commence.
You can also move your Koala Blanket around with you!
Want to cuddle up on the sofa to binge a TV show? No problem.
Feeling a bit cold, down and out? Throw your Koala Blanket over your shoulders and wear it around the house. It’s up to you how you use it.
What makes it unique?
The Koala Blanket was developed over a period of 18-months. 15 prototypes later, the product you can buy today came to be.
Hundreds of fabrics were trialled before Ultra Soft Mink and Silky Bamboo were chosen, but these plush fabrics tell only half the story.
The unique pattern of the Koala Blanket ensures it forms to your body and applies gentle, even pressure without being overbearing.
Unlike some cheaper competitor products, Koala uses non-toxic, BPA-free glass beads which are smaller than plastic beads and distribute weight better.
The blanket pattern has small pockets for these beads, to keep them separate and prevent the weight distribution from flopping one way or another.
Those beads will never escape either, thanks to the double-stitching and thick thread of the cover which is designed to last a lifetime.
How much does it cost?
There are two versions of the Koala Blanket available. They are both the same product functionally, differing in size only.
The RRP for the single 6.8kg blanket is £170 and the 9kg version £180. The RRP for the double 6.8kg blanket is £190 and the 9kg version £200.00.
HOWEVER, the 48x78” blanket (single size) is currently available for a reduced price of £109.99 in 6.8kg weight or £116.99 in 9kg weight, and the 60x80” blanket (double size) is currently available for a reduced price of £122.99 in 6.8kg weight or £129.99 in 9kg weight.

Is it worth it?
Suffering from insomnia and/ or anxiety is a terrible thing. The Koala Blanket enables the practice of deep pressure touch stimulation, which has been shown to improve symptoms of insomnia and anxiety in many cases.
JSciMed Central published an in-depth study on this. They found study participants who used a weighted blanket settled down easier and had a calmer night’s sleep. The conclusion of the study is telling:
“A weighted blanket may aid in reducing insomnia through altered tactile inputs [DPS], thus may provide an innovative, non-pharmacological approach and complementary tool to improve sleep quality.”
Of course, there’s no guarantee it will solve your specific case, but it will almost certainly help you feel more comfortable and relaxed.
Plus, you’ll have a beautiful, plush blanket to snuggle up with!
