If you’re here because you struggle to drift off and stay asleep, there will probably be a number of reasons why which you can put your finger on, such as anxiety, restless legs, or a tendency to feel too hot or cold in bed.
For many people, being a ‘hot’ or ‘cold’ sleeper is the root cause of the problem. What makes it unusual, however, is how it manifests itself.
Often, hot and cold sleepers will feel too hot or cold in a room which is a normal temperature. They can even wake up in the middle of the night shivering or sweating, when their partner is perfectly fine beside them…
A weighted breakthrough!
A remedy a lot of people have had success with is a weighted blanket. These weigh more than a regular duvet - around 7-13% of your body weight - and are proven to help relieve the symptoms of insomnia, anxiety and restlessness.
One ground-breaking study published in 2015 looked into the potential effects of a weighted blanket on insomnia. It found those who used a weighted blanket had better sleep than those who didn’t. The study concluded this was through altered tactile inputs, the very same which can affect body temperature regulation.
The Koala weighted blanket
The great thing about the Koala Blanket for hot and cold sleepers is it is breathable and made from fabrics which do not trap moisture.
The Koala Blanket is also unique in that it has a reversible cover. One side of the cover is made from ultra-soft mink; the other side is made from silky cotton-bamboo. The mink side feels warmer and the bamboo side feels cooler.
The blanket is also weighted without being thick, so it does not particularly provide additional warmth on its own.
It is only when you layer the Koala Blanket up with a quilt or another blanket that it becomes warm. This means you can use it on its own in the summer to stay cool and use it with another blanket in winter and stay warm.
In other words, you can use it all year round.
How it works
The extra weight of a weighted blanket helps it conform to your body, applying gentle pressure to your legs and torso. This replicates the sensation of being cuddled or swaddled which has a calming physical and psychological effect.
In the United States and in some hospitals in Europe, this therapy has a name. It’s called Deep Pressure Stimulation (DPS) which hospitals enable with ‘squeeze machines’ which are basically machines which give you a gentle hug. Weighted blankets enable the same therapy at home, or anywhere you take your blanket!
However, not all weighted blankets are created equal. We know this because as part of developing the Koala Blanket, we tested the competition.
The Koala Blanket is designed to be better than other weighted blankets for hot and cold sleepers. There are several ways in which we achieved this:
1# It has a glass pellet filling (as opposed to cheaper plastic pellets). These are smaller than plastic pellets but denser, so they take up less space and less of them are needed to create the same weight. This translates to a more comfortable blanket - you cannot feel the pellets when they move. It also means heat can escape through the blanket more rapidly.
2# There are two outer cover materials. One side is made from ultra-soft mink; the other side is made from silky cotton-bamboo. The cover is reversible, so you don’t have to have two different outer covers. Competitor weighted blankets either require you to purchase more than one outer cover, or they don’t offer the option at all, leaving you stuck with one outer cover which you may not like in the first place.
3# We chose the weight options for the Koala Blanket very carefully. Our blanket is available in three weights - 4kg, 6.8kg, 9kg - for people who weigh anywhere from 35kg upwards. Experts agree a weighted blanket should be 7-13% of your body weight to maximise the therapeutic effects. At 4kg, 6.8kg and 9kg, the Koala Blanket is suitable for adults and children aged over 10. These weights are not overbearing to ensure the blanket can be worn in comfort whether you are a hot or cold sleeper.
